Johannesburg – Thursday, 18 July 2024 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) congratulates renowned news broadcaster Mr. Masego Ezekiel Matjila, who was today, conferred with an honorary doctorate degree by the North-West University (NWU).
The honorary doctorate acknowledges Mr. Matjila’s significant contribution to the South African society, particularly in promoting the Sesotho, Sepedi, and Setswana languages in broadcasting.
His illustrious broadcasting career spans over 30 years. He cut his teeth as an on-air radio personality at Radio Setswana, which later became Motsweding FM following its merger with Radio Mmabatho. He also managed the archives for Radio Setswana, the Afrikaans Service, Radio Ndebele (Ikwekwezi FM), and Radio Swazi (Ligwalagwala FM).
As a result of his exceptional broadcasting skills and language proficiency, Mr. Matjila was appointed as a Setswana Sports Commentator by the then SABC Topsport now SABC Sports. He later moved to the News department, as a prime-time News Presenter for Sesotho, Sepedi, and Setswana news from 1993 until his retirement in 2021. In addition, he served as a Bulletin Editor and Executive Producer.

Throughout his career, he has showcased exceptional skills in delivering compelling and informative news content to engage and captivate audiences, setting a high standard for journalism at the SABC.”
Mr. Matjila has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting the Setswana language at the SABC. His work has earned him a reputation as an influential and distinguished broadcast journalist and continues to serve as the epitome of journalistic excellence.
